USDAHawaiisSoilsVisit the Lyman Museum for a special presentation by Amy Koch of the USDA about Hawaiiʻs soils! This informative and fun program is being presented at the Lyman Museum on two occasions – Monday afternoon, April 10, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and again the same evening, Monday, April 10, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

When you think about it, soil is so much more than mere “dirt.” Soil tells the story of the iconic landscapes of the Hawaiian Islands, layer by layer, from the surface down to the rock below. Ever wonder why Hawai’i Island soils are different from Kaua’i soils? How do plants affect soil and how does soil affect plants

Amy Koch, soil scientist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, answers these questions and many others in an exploration of what lies beneath. She describes the soil-forming factors that combine to create the diversity of soils found on Hawai’i Island and throughout the State, and addresses the importance of healthy soil to our daily lives, including what you can do to make your soil healthier.

The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of Hawai‘i. Located in historic downtown Hilo at 276 Haili Street, the Museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (808) 935-5021 or visit www.lymanmuseum.org.
